
The Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation is pleased to continue its charitable commitment to educational services by announcing its 2011 scholarship recipients. Nine outstanding young people have earned awards totaling $24,000. These students were selected based upon academic performance, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and financial need.
Gilbert Freeman Dallas District Golf Association Award ($8,000)
John Mark Long, Junior – Amherst, Texas
Ranked in the top ten percent of his class John is a three sport student-athlete (golf, basketball, football) at Littlefield High School, serving as captain on both the golf team and football team. He is a National Honor Society member and Vice President of Future Farmers of America. John also serves on the State 4-H Council and is 1st Vice President and President of his 4-H District and Local club, respectively. He is a Rotary and Lions Club speaker and is part of the Certified Emergency Response Team. John will attend Texas A&M in the fall and will study animal science.
Nicholas Stafford Award ($2,000)
Hunter Robinson – Coppell, Texas
Hunter will graduate from Coppell High School with over a 5.0 GPA and member of the National Honor Society. He is a three sport varsity student-athlete (golf, basketball, track) and captain of the golf team. Hunter completed a four-year engineering program while in high school and plans to major in nanotechnology engineering at the University of California – Santa Barbara, where he will also compete on the men’s golf team.
Randy Smith Award ($2,000)
Elena Thomas – Waxahachie, Texas
With a 3.806 GPA, Elena ranks in the top ten percent of her class and is in the National Honor Society. Her extracurricular activities include serving as secretary of Leo Club and president of New Horizons, as well as participating as a member of the AP Science Club. She is a four year letter winner in golf, and served as captain, and will attend Appalachian State University in the fall. In college, Elena will play on the women’s golf team on a partial scholarship and study Geology.
Ben Hogan/James Peebles & Kay Day Scholarship ($2,000)
Megan Rooney – Flower Mound, Texas
Megan maintains a 3.882 GPA at Flower Mound High School while also participating as captain on the girl’s golf team. She is a member of the National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, and the Student Council. This year Megan was recognized for four years of service and academic excellence at Flower Mound High School’s “Evening with the Star.” Megan will begin her studies at Oklahoma State University in the fall.
Ben Hogan/Lindsay and Amy Stites ($2,000)
Wayde Voss – Frisco, Texas
Throughout his high school career Wayde has served on the City of Frisco Mayor’s Youth Council where he consults on the needs of Frisco’s teens and serves as the committee chair for the “Day with the Mayor” event. Wayde is a two-year letterman on the Centennial High School’s boy’s golf team and served as captain as a senior. He will be attending Florida State University in the fall as part of the Professional Golf Management program.
Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities Scholarship ($2,000)
Alyssa Carillo – Sachse, Texas
Alyssa is a four-year letter winner in girl’s golf at Sachse High School and was part of three District 5A-12 Girl’s Golf District Champion teams. She ranks in the top ten percent of her class and serves as a tutor for fellow classmates in Calculus. She has also served as a church camp volunteer and on church mission trips the past two years. Alyssa plans to study computer engineering in college.
West Texas Legends Scholarship honoring S.A. Smith, Hart Warren, and Jay McClure ($2,000)
Jonathan Dansby – Lubbock, Texas
Jonathan has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while at Lubbock Christian High School and ranks third in his class. He is active in the band, playing both the tuba and bass guitar, and has been an All-Region band member each of his four years in high school. Jonathan has been the “Most Outstanding Boy” at his school three years in a row and is a four-year letter winner and captain on the boy’s golf team. He will attend Lubbock Christian University in the fall and play on the men’s golf team.
2011 PGA Member Scholarship ($2,000)
Leanne O’Donnell – Austin, Texas
With a weighted GPA of 5.561, Leanne ranks fourth in a class of 650 students at McNeil High School. She is a four year member of the McNeil Mighty Maverick Marching Band, serving as flute leader and drum major. Leanne has also earned Division 1 ratings at the state band competition in flute. She is National Honor Society Vice President and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society Treasurer. Leanne is also a President’s Volunteer Service Award recipient. She will attend Texas Christian University this fall as part of the Honors College and plans to double major in English and Art History.
Mac Spikes Award ($2,000)
Cassidy Woodson – Sachse, Texas
As a student at Richland Collegiate High School, Cassidy will graduate this spring with her high school diploma and associate’s degree. She is a four sport letter winner and also participated in student government as an underclassman. Cassidy volunteers for the Sachse Animal Shelter and the Diabetes Association. She will be attending the University of Arkansas next year and plans to major in Industrial Organizational Psychology.
